Legendary Parties

ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES WILL OWE A DEBT TO THIS SUPERBOOK. LEGENDARY PARTIES BY PRINCE JEAN-LOUIS DE FAUCIGNY-LUCINGE. THE ULTIMATE 'ABOUT LAST NIGHT' BOOK. THE BIG BLACK BOOK OF THE BEST NIGHTS EVER.

Legendary Parties 1922-1972 . A speedball for the society set. Published in 1986, fourteen years after the last party it documents. That's some recovery time!

This intimate menage a trois is from that last party. Baron and Baroness Guy de Rothschild's Surrealist Ball. This couple's names are actually too long for this caption!*

Not quite mange tout but totally awesome. This table-setting alone takes this book into intastella superbook territory. The six page biographical index at the back is one of the great reads of all time.

On the left, Claude Lebon and Charlotte Aillaud. Claude, you discover, when you read the index, was 'a young dentist with social access' - one of the shorter entries! Charlotte was Juliette Greco's sister and a heroine of the French resistance. The woman with the apple mask is Jacqueline Delubac, a French actress of great beauty. We don't know the thinking behind her costume - only that it serves to be obscure and to obscure at the same time. Smart.

One year before and Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg were photographed by Cecil Beaton attending the Rothschild's Proust Ball of 1971. And to the right, Princess 'Baba' de Faucigny-Lucinge, first wife of this book's author Prince Jean-Louis de Faucigny-Lucinge, at the original 1928 Proust Ball. 1928 could easily be 1982 and she could have been photographed by Bruce Weber for a story in Tatle r. She is timeless.

Two guests of the Marquis de Cuevas at the Goya Ball held in Biarritz in 1950. The photograph is by Henry Clark. The whole book is a super delight. See much more of it here
