LIST

THE BOWERY BAR, JOE'S PUB, LA ESQUINA, LA BODEGRA NEGRA. NEW YORK DESIGNER / IMPRESSARIO SERGE BECKER HAS MANY BARS TO HIS NAME BUT ONLY ONE MAGAZINE. IN FACT THE LIST OF ALL MAGAZINES PUBLISHED BY BECKER IS A LIST OF ONE.

No explanation nor credit is offered for the cover model. Maybe, for Serge Becker and his co-editor Lisa Ano, LIST magazine was their baby. He or she would certainly have been a cheaper booking than any of the models on the list to the right. Gisele four times the price of Kate Moss in 2000. Wow!

A list that runs over three pages of LIST. And it is an A List. It is the invite list for Tina Brown's Talk Magazine Launch Party. These are our favourite pages. And our favourite sequence is... Jay McInerney, Ian McKellen, Joe McKenna... It's too much fun. Being on the list is one thing: In 2000 you had to be in the LIST as well.

Almost the entire issue is lists. But although lists of text read well, they would, of course, look a lot like a telephone directory. So  LIST went in for visual sequences too. This double page is from The World's Top Gay Bachelor Pads by Jim Walrod and Liz Fried. These are views of Karl Lagerfeld's I'll-have-one-of-everything Memphis apartment in Monte Carlo. 'Heaven' is our one word comment.

To the left the incredible Allan Carr Disco, designed for the producer of Grease by his friend Cher (of course) and to the right an aspect of Thierry Mugler's 'style dictator' Paris apartment. Image wise, the magazine looked a little then like Instagram does now... picture after picture: a visual list.

There is a whole Recyclist section where fashion photographs are shown alongside their inspirations. To the right, Antonioni's Zabriskie Point and two homages by Steven Meisel and Peter Lindbergh. The pictures to the left are of particular interest now. The Alex Katz inspiration for the Meisel composition below which Meisel, M/M Paris and Jonathan Anderson have just reprised 'as is' for the Loewe campaign (as our friends at Hero neatly explain). See more of LIST on this superlink. Ask to buy this one exceptionally hard to find copy here
