GIGS IN SCOTLAND! THE CHOICE IS YOURS... WE'LL

GO WITH SHIRLEY ONLY

HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS MANSON. SHE'S SCOTTISH, OBVIOUSLY - LIVES IN LA.

Published in 2010. One of recent history's best books. We wrote about Chris Brickley's
Saints & Sinners a few months ago. That's a great book but really a small sequel to this first epic adventure. 16 Years: Gigs In Scotland has 2000+ images over its 500 pages. It is colossal.

It is also epic in its everyday ordinariness. The photographs have been submitted by ever so many people and don't just cover the bands that played, or even just the gig-goers themselves; the real street fashion comes from the people standing in front of posters selection.

Or people in the queue for The Smiths at Barrowlands, Glasgow in 1985 as photographed by Nanilee Darmrong. Note the Tyne Tees Television van. They could well have been responsible for this
YouTube by way of Channel 4 and The Tube classic.

Aesthetically very pleasing indeed. When Blixa Bargeld can match the corridor paintwork of the The Pavilion Theatre with the one of the tones in his two-tone checkerboard tie, you know you are looking at something special.

Same gig - The Bad Seeds - sees Nick Cave in a different blue.

Honesty is the best policy. David Bowie in 1978 rendered one Neil Mclean SPEECHLESS, while David Essex picks up two exclamation marks for being SHIT!! It is a hell of a list. Scotland was not short of visiting talent (and Simple Minds) that year.

Possibly our favourite photo in this book - only because we are not sure whether these two have come out to see Colin Neil + Craig O or if they indeed are Colin Neil and Craig O.

Oh, and this because, in that light, Lemmy from Motorhead looks like he could have joined The Doors. The whole massive book is treasure from start to finish. Hundreds and hundreds of bands spanning the years 1974 -1990. Punk and post punk and new wave and indie and metal...

Brilliant Bryan Ferry in a cricket jumper, tie and leather jacket. Heaven is a place on earth somewhere in Scotland.

This book sold out a long time ago. It's scarce and valuable BUT not so expensive it will kill you. We have begged, borrowed and bought twenty copies and priced them at £65. Now we can all go on a summer holiday.

For the most completely and completely compelling indie rock photobook we have ever seen hit the red button below.
