Made in Japan

ALL DESIGNERS! ALL PATTERN DESIGNERS! ALL TADANORI YOKOO, ETTORE SOTTSASS, TINA CHOW AND DAVID BYRNE FANS! YOU NEED THIS NEWLY DISCOVERED STRAIGHT UP SUPERBOOK. MADE IN JAPAN: THE TEXTILES OF JUERGEN LEHL.

Who knew? Not us until now. A book about the patterns and fabrics of Juergen Lehl, a German designer who worked in Tokyo since starting a company there in 1972. Lehl died in 2014 but his company is still BIG in Japan with 40 plus stores. This book was published in 1983. It is a book of Lehl's textiles but the author is Tadanori Yokoo. It is Yokoo's visual response to the fabrics and patterns. And it is incredible.

For example. This page. Probably all Yokoo. But maybe not. The index says this is a photographic screen print on cotton voile. On the right that is. And on the left either Yokoo's response or original inspiration.

And these pages... could be a lot of things. And could be the other way up. Quite possibly. What it definitely is is EXCELLENT.

140 pages. And they are all like this. Part textile part visual anything. One of the most wonderfully postmodern expressions of graphic energy we have seen. Extraordinarily, the book also has texts by - and this does take some believing, as they are all are absolutely favourites ever - Ettore Sottsass, Tina Chow and David Byrne!!! Three exclamation marks. One for each of them.

Fell in love with a page. This one of course.

Not David Byrne. But very, very him, nonetheless.

We have six of these books. Right now there are no more to be found. We got the lot. And for good reason. It is the best pattern and textile reference book ever. And it reads like Talking Heads sleeve notes.

Buy now on the button below. Hitting that will open up an email to us and sending it will start a very fast fusion reaction in which we say if there are any left and what the price is and you say YES! Try it.
