Pleasures and Terrors of Domestic Comfort

PLEASURES AND TERRORS

OF DOMESTIC COMFORT.

WHICH IS VERY LIKELY THE BEST PHOTOBOOK TITLE OF ALL TIME AND DEFINITELY

THE BEST BOOK WITH A

GREAT TITLE WE HAVE EVER SEEN. PUBLISHED IN 1991.

WE DIDN'T WRITE ABOUT IT BEFORE. THE BIGGEST OMISSION OF THEM ALL. IT IS QUITE BEYOND THE VALLEY

OF THE SUPERBOOKS!

Yes the Japanese icon book
Lonely Boy River Phoenix and the 1974 graffiti book Watching My Name Go By both have very great titles BUT doesn't this just cross the line first. It is the gold standard of book titles. A title the book shared with the hugely influential 1991 exhibition curated by Peter Galassi at New York's Museum of Modern Art. That show and this book are cornerstones in the foundation of all that is IDEA. So deeply wonderful. Philip-Lorca diCorcia cover photograph too.

You may well know the book from this Stephen Shore photograph.
Michael and Sandy Marsh, Amarillo, Texas, 1974. It is very, very good but something about it makes it exponentially popular on Instagram. His look to the camera? Is that what makes it what it is?

In the book, the Stephen Shore shares a page with this Cindy Sherman. You can imagine the perfect orange peach of the presentation. The theme is the home and the family of course but within that there are aesthetic themes; the warm glow of belonging to a place or a person being one of them.

Joel Sternfeld's
Lawyer at Home, Malibu, California, 1988. So, so, so many great pink things at work in that picture but we'd go for the bends of the legs (both Pucci print lawyer and tubular base table).

Of course there are Tina Barney pictures. This from her great titled superbook
Theater of Manners

And more Joel Sternfeld.
Canyon County, California, 1983. Yes the rise and fall of hi shorts is a thing BUT the daughter has the most effortless style. It could be from a film but sometimes one picture can do so much more.

Doug DuBois for this forever picture of his sister Lise and her auburn hair.

And back to Philip-Lorca diCorcia because, for all the favourite photographers in the book we didn't feature (Mary Frey, William Eggleston, Nicholas Nixon, Carrie Mae Weems, Nan Goldin), we can't not include this. Pinch and zoom for the dog's doubtful eyes. It is a masterwork. This photo and this book.

OK - two copies - button below. We had more but people keep buying them! You will never ever be less than impressed. So pleased and proud of your new brilliant book.
