Damn, this is a rare book! 3000 Hangovers Later: Photos of the Warwick Castle and Portobello in the 1980s.
During the early 1980’s The Warwick Castle pub in Portobello Road in London's Notting Hill Gate seemed to be close to the centre of the world. It was dynamic, creative, with punters ranging from labourers (artisans now, of course) to movie makers – music business to monkey business. What was the buzz?
Perhaps it was the sight of Harry Dean Stanton sharing anecdotes and drinking Guinness with Keith Allen, or maybe John Lydon huddled in a corner with John Savage, spilling the beans for ‘England’s Dreaming’ or, to sit transfixed, enjoying Joe Strummer playing an acoustic ‘Junco Partner’ live in there as part of an Old Roughians Cricket Club fundraiser.
There were six or seven good years in The Warwick. There are many theories about how it ended. It either coincided almost to the day Pete the Murderer punched a hole through the dart board and all hell broke loose, or could it have been the night a minor female aristocrat, returning from the loo, went arse over tit when she fell over ‘dogwoman's’ Labrador, sprawled out next to the pool table?
Ray Roughler Jones's pictures capture the zeitgeist of the time, a record of a very different world from the gastropubs of today.
