Published between 1986 and 1993, Hanuman Books was founded by Raymond Foye and Francesco Clemente. The books were designed after small handmade Indian prayer books discovered by the duo on a trip to the country and featured some of the biggest names in avant-garde and beat culture of the time. The administrative and editorial divisions of the press were housed in New York's Chelsea Hotel, while printing and binding were done in Madras, India.
