Contemporary Fashion

SHOICHI AOKI'S STREET MAGAZINE IS LEGEND.

WITHOUT AN INVITE TO THE PARIS FASHION SHOWS, HE SHOT THE PEOPLE OUTSIDE AND INVENTED A GENRE. HE ALSO WON HIMSELF AN

ENTRE INTO THE WORLD OF FASHION. INVITES TO SHOWS

BY WESTWOOD, MARGIELA

AND COMME. BETWEEN 1995 AND 1998, HE MADE SEVEN ISSUES OF CONTEMPORARY FASHION (BY STREET). ALL OF THEM AMAZINES.

The first four. One of design history's most daring title type separations! And the names... Christopher Nemeth, Alexander McQueen, Comme des Garçons, Orson + Bodil (for the fashion histographers now) and Vivienne Westwood.

The McQueen show
Highland Rape. The rape of Scotland by the English. Hugely influential collection presented over the first thirteen pages of the first issue. What a way to start!

McQueen again. From the third issue. Still 1995 - presenting Spring Summer. A not safe / now safe for work suit. Big smile - amazing energy.

There is MUCH Margiela from the second issue through to the seventh. A four year history of the clothes in motion / design in evolution.

Kate in Comme. 1995. Issue 3.

There are some looks that time forgot. This Jean-Paul Gaultier rave scene wizard with riding crop number!

Shoichi had his favourites for sure. Christopher Nemeth for one. Nicely turned out newspaper pockets.

Christopher Nemeth in his studio in Japan. There is an illustrated Japanese / English interview in issue 1. Real treasure.

The later issues deliver big on Margiela, Westwood and Comme. And add in Helmut Lang, of course. Plus they drop in little secret treats for true fashion histographers: Xuly Bet, GR816, Koji Tatsuno and the fabulous Gomme in Tokyo.

These seven issues are the anti-fashion nineties amazines. The visual reference to the extra unordinary. One full set on the button below. Let's go.
